A ccording to Herczog, aca ­ dem ic re a so n s w ill fo rce the University to install cable in in­ dividual rooms in the near fu­ ture. “Sure, it will be g reat to have cab le for e n te r ta in m e n t p u r ­ p o ses, b u t h av in g cab le also opens up d iffe ren t academ ic options,” she said. “For exam ple, w ithin a few years, students and teachers at Boston College will be able to transm it things back and forth to each o ther th rough cab le ,” she said. “This is very in terac­ tive education.” H erczeg sa id th a t S tuden t G overnm ent c o n ta c te d o th e r colleges and universities to find out how they have handled the question of cable installation. “Every school we ta lked to e ith e r h as cab le or is in the p ro c e s s o f in s ta l l in g i t , ” Herczeg said. “Everyone is get­ tin g i t— from C re ig h to n U n iv e rs ity in th e m id d le of Nebraska to Boston College.” A ccording to H erczog, last year the University re jected a ta s k fo rc e p ro p o s a l r e c o m ­ mending cable installation. “The U niversity re jec ted it because they were told it would cost $1 million,” she said. “But w e’ve been told th a t it could cost only $300,000 for the ini­ tial set-up.” Herczog said that it would be up to the University to d e te r­ mine how to settle the monthly cable bills. “Som e n e tw o rk s , su ch as CNN and CSpan, give free ac­ cess to e d u c a tio n a l in s t i tu ­ t io n s ,” sh e s a id . “The University has its own options about how to do tha t.” A ccording to H erczog, the University also expressed some concern that cable television in each room might break up the ‘Notre Dame community’. “They w ere w orried th a t it w o u ld en d th e t r a d i t io n of watching cable in the lounges,” she said. “But if Notre Dame has to use T.V. as a way of uni­ fying the student body, then we defin ite ly need to s e a rc h for other options.” Herczog noted tha t the s tu ­ den t surveys which w ere d is­ t r ib u te d to th e d o rm s h av e show n overw helm ing support for cable installation. “The students are for it, it is ex trem ely cost-effective, and we are going to have to do it so o n e r o r l a t e r , ” sh e sa id . “W hy h av e to go w ire th e rooms twice? It makes sense to install cable now.” Acadamic workshops to increase success
